Just Rest

Just Rest

Sometimes our bodies force us to rest. Full stop. If you don't heed the signals, you might be forcibly coerced into having to sit and stare at the horizon, except it may come with aches and pains to remind you that you could have been looking at a lovely horizon without the pain. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I walked into a room of educators this week and asked how the first couple of weeks had been, and they didn't groan, but they weren't lit by enthusiastic glee either. The beginning of a school year is a lot like getting to an extremely high base camp that leads to an even higher elevation (says someone who knows nothing about climbing other than what her mountain climber-friend-coach shares). The beginnings and endings of school years are steep, filled with perils and joys, but also exhausting. Teachers and administrators must be fit for the elevation gain or risk getting hit with sickness or injury.

Rest and sleep are essential to the body, mind, and spirit. Our society doesn't like to prioritize rest, and when they discuss it, it becomes another thing to check off a long list of to-dos. I don't want to add to someone's long list of tasks.

Instead, I want to remind you to sit and stare off at whatever horizon is in front of you (may it be slightly lovely) occasionally, letting your mind drift. In the drift, creativity and kindness (to yourself and others) are born again. Instead of just do-ing it, rest.

If I had to pick a horizon, this would be one of my favorites (Japanese garden, Huntington)

Publishing Update

For those following my indie-publishing journey, I am pleased to report that I am in the final stages of production of my first e-book for educators on banishing burnout and using micromoments to bring a sense of calm into their (our) lives. It has been a labor of love for four years.
